Changes in how masculinity gets constructed are often historically responsive to changes in femininity. Social changes reverberate to alter the family’s structure and especially its relation to economy and society. This in turn creates shifts in gender relations as women begin to move from domestic to public spheres and construct an ideology to account for such movement. As women thus define themselves differently, given that the two are relational constructions, the definition of masculinity is necessarily called into question. But no matter how one punctuates social changes of this kind, it is men’s work on themselves that will be crucial in the reconstruction of men’s lives.
